What's a Good Price Per Round? Every Caliber Benchmarked for 2026
How to Use This Page
Before you buy ammo, check the table below. If the price you're seeing is in the green “Good Deal” column, buy it. If it's in the Fair Price range, it's normal market pricing. If it's above Fair Price, you're overpaying — shop elsewhere. We update this monthly based on actual retailer pricing.

Defensive / Self-Defense Ammo Benchmarks
Defensive ammo always costs more than range ammo. Premium JHP loads from Federal, Speer, and Hornady are priced for their engineering, testing, and nickel-plated cases — not because retailers are gouging.
| Caliber | Good Deal | Fair Price | Overpaying |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9mm JHP (HST, Gold Dot) | Under $0.55 | $0.55–$0.75 | Above $0.85 |
| .45 ACP JHP | Under $0.80 | $0.80–$1.10 | Above $1.25 |
| .380 ACP JHP | Under $0.55 | $0.55–$0.80 | Above $0.90 |
| 5.56 Defensive (V-Max, TAP) | Under $0.60 | $0.60–$0.80 | Above $0.90 |
How to Calculate True Cost Per Round
The number on the product page isn't your real cost. Here's the actual formula:
Example: A 1,000-round case of 9mm for $219 + $18 shipping + $0 tax = $237 ÷ 1,000 = $0.237/round. That same ammo in a 50-round box at $14.99 + $8 flat rate shipping = $22.99 ÷ 50 = $0.46/round — nearly double.
Always buy in case quantities. The per-round price difference between buying a 50-round box and a 1,000-round case is typically 30–50%. Free shipping thresholds matter: SGAmmo ships free on orders over $200, Palmetto State Armory on select items over $49–$99, and Target Sports USA AMMO+ members get free shipping on everything for ~$96/year.
Where to Find the Best Prices
| Retailer | Free Shipping | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| SGAmmo | Orders $200+ | Lowest CPR on bulk/import ammo |
| Palmetto State Armory | Select items / $49–$99 promos | Daily deals, own brand ammo |
| Lucky Gunner | No (flat rate $15–$25/case) | Same-day shipping, guaranteed in-stock |
| Target Sports USA | AMMO+ members (~$96/yr) | 8% discount + free ship = best for high volume |
| Natchez | Periodic promotions | Flash sales that beat everyone |
| Brownells | Edge members ($49.99/yr) | Best when combining ammo + parts orders |
